Tripods for Landscape Photography (Our Photo Equipment - Part I)

A look into the current photographic equipment: our tripods

We are asked more and more often with which equipment we actually photograph and what tips we can give for good landscapes. We like to anticipate the first tip: good equipment is just as important as a good tool for the craftsman. But it still depends on you, because even the best equipment is only as good as you use it.

Therefore, we will gladly introduce our photo equipment below, which after many experiences and attempts currently helps us to take our pictures. Let's start with a far too often neglected product, which is indispensable in demanding landscape photography. Whether it's the northern lights in the darkness of the polar night, a grandiose landscape in the last light of the day or professional shots with different filters. Without a tripod, these situations are usually unmanageable.

We now use a variety of different tripods for a variety of constellations and challenges. For the time being, one model is enough for entry. Over time, and with growing demands, more variants will be added. In any case, here - as with almost all the equipment - the whole package is as good as the weakest link in the chain. So you should not save in the wrong place and make lame compromises.

We love it ... For years, our Manfrotto carbon tripod is almost always there. We are still and again and again impressed by the stability in the low weight of just 2000 grams (without tripod head). It also seems indestructible, whether we used it in saltwater, lava sand or on the beach.

Due to the construction with the flexibly adjustable center column one is prepared for every situation. So you can use it but already a minimum height of 9 centimeters. We have also added the perfect matching ball head Manfrotto MHXPRO-BHQ2 XPRO and are absolutely satisfied with this combination.

After having gained so much experience with our large Manfrotto tripod, it was natural that we should also buy a model of the Italian manufacturer as a "second tripod". We needed another tripod for our new system camera * CANON D-SLR EOS 5 D MK IV , while we temporally film the situation with the SONY system camera on the smaller tripod.

Regardless of the fact that we really swear by the Manfrotto 055 Carbon, it is worth considering getting started with the Manfrotto BeFree Live, especially for a start or on a budget. It's easy to handle, compact, lightweight and perfect for frequent travelers.

If you carry the rucksack with your equipment on a mountain during a summit tour in Norway, it depends on every gram. Nevertheless, we can not and do not want to do without a tripod for the perfect picture. And so we bought this ultimate small and lightweight tripod from Rollei, which has been part of every longer or more challenging hike ever since.

The Rollei Compact Traveler Mini M is certainly not the professional super-tripod nor a world champion in terms of stability. But nevertheless we like it, because it is in case of doubt without much effort or space requirement at any time and ready for use. The CANON EOS 5 D MK IV and a wide-angle lens are just right. However, one must be careful that the camera does not get overweight and the tripod stands well. So far, we have always done well and one or the other image here in the blog would not exist because of our little "hiking tripod" ....

There are always situations, because the best and highest quality tripod is only of limited use for you. Especially when it comes to "only just support something quickly", a monopod is perfect in handling, easy to transport and versatile. We use it mostly in combination with our telephoto lenses in wildlife photography, just to have a weight relief.

We also use it in special situations for one or the other video sequence. Before we had our Rollei mini tripod, we've taken the Cullmann monopod on mountain tours, and then clamped between some stones if necessary. This is not necessarily recommended for imitation, but has helped us in the moment.

The Cullmann Nanomax 290 is now obviously no longer produced. But there is a similar successor, which we have linked to you for more information:

The market of the gimbal is booming and the supply is difficult to comprehend, as obviously every week new models, companies and technologies are added. Therefore we discovered this model only in the third attempt. We were not satisfied with the two previously tested solutions and have therefore resold these products on ebay. The Crane 2, on the other hand, convinces us so far because of its sophisticated solutions and many details, such as the integrated quick release plate for the camera.

In any case, you should deal intensively with the possibilities and the operating concept of the respective gimbal models before purchasing. Regardless of this, each product requires intensive training and many tests before you can handle the camera-gimbal combination. But then open up completely new possibilities and your creativity in video shooting are no limits set.

After our two first erroneous purchases, we have long dealt with the next purchase and finally decided between the ZHIYUN Crane 2 and the * * more about this gimbal on

We hope that with this "look into our photo backpack" we could give you some suggestions for your next purchase. At the same time we have hopefully answered part of the question of how and with what we take our pictures ....

In any case, we look forward to your questions and comments and some additions to our contribution - like with your own experiences.
